How intense is your anger?

Anger is an emotion that every person has. There are numerous words that we use to describe anger which often also conveys the intensity. Words for anger that wes use can be: mild irritation, frustration, resentment, anger, hatred, and rage.

When anger is too high then those who internalize will take the passive-aggressive approach and will develop high blood pressure, an ulcer, walk out unexpected on a loved one, give the cold shoulder, use isolation, gossip, use veiled insults or snap with their words. Whereas the aggressive individual will scream, yell, throw things, slam doors, break things, become physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive to people.

Harmful anger

Harmful anger is expressed when a person does the following things:

  • Punishing another individual.
  • Expressing themselves violently through words and actions.
  • Manipulate or control another person.
  • When anger is self-serving.
  • When they push down their emotions.
  • Blame others for their mistakes or unfortunate events.
  • Regularly associates with people who are aggressive and angry.
  • Holds onto thier anger holding a grudge.
  • When they hold onto hurt or disappointment that have have with themselves, people, or the world.

Causes of anger?

There are numerous causes of anger which can be caused by internal and external events. Possibly you are angry with your partner, a coworker or boss or a traffic jam, a cancelled flight, or possibly you are worrying about a problem.  Another determining factor that often is the underlying root cause to anger are memories of traumatic or upsetting events.

Some underlying causes for anger are:

  • Sexual abuse
  • Physical abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Neglect in childhood
  • Poor attachment in childhood.
  • Bullying
  • Learned behaviour from angry people in your family or friends

How can I manage my anger?

There are numerous self-help techniques that can help you manage your anger.  Such techniques can include but are not limited to:
